Building a Future For Scotland's Landmarks

Several of Scotland's best-known, environmentally friendly and historic establishments have recently implemented unique and innovative concepts with the launch of new public catering facilities. While they differ in form and function, they all share a key theme; each project was planned and built with the help of the country's leading design, supply and installation specialists. Catering in Scotland profiles the market-leader, Bunzl Lockhart Catering Equipment

Bunzl Lockhart Catering Equipment and its Design Services divisions, appear to be leading the field in the design, supply and installation of catering equipment in Scotland. They have recently completed major projects for the new Motherwell College site at Ravenscraig, the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, the new Visitor Centre at Europe's largest windfarm at Whitelee on Eaglesham Moor and Turnberry on the Ayrshire Coast - recent hosts of the 138th British Open.
'These were major projects for our teams to undertake and because of their environmental credentials they reinforce our own BeGreen policy,' says Chris Wakeman, Director and General Manager at Bunzl Lockhart. 'Our aim was to not only meet and exceed each client's expectations, but also to be respectful and sympathetic to each build.'

Motherwell College

After relocating from its existing site at Dalzell Drive, the brand-new, purpose-built campus opened last month on a former steel works site at Ravenscraig. Covering 200,000 sq ft and costing in excess of £70million, the site includes a state-of-the-art £650,000 catering facility for training Scotland's chefs of the future.
'A development of this magnitude comprising such a vast array of facilities and elements takes a great deal of meticulous planning, commitment and co-ordination to ensure its success,' says Jacqui Doughty, Project Sponsor from Motherwell College. 'We are delighted with the design and installation work, and we feel that Bunzl Lockhart have fulfilled both our expectations and the brief.'

Craig Paton, Regional Design Director at Bunzl Lockhart Catering Design Services, explains: 'We were awarded the contract in September last year to design, supply and install the new state-of-the-art catering facilities to train the chefs of the future. The brief from Motherwell College was to create a state-of-the-art facility that would encourage students to learn the skills required to embark on a career in the catering and hospitality industry. We worked with innovative and environmentally-friendly manufacturers to give students a modern and creative platform from which to learn.'

Motherwell College's new purpose-built catering facility comprises:

  • A refectory kitchen and servery
  • Four teaching kitchens
  • A production kitchen
  • Demonstration kitchen
  • Bakery
  • Stores
  • Coffee bar
  • Retail
  • Nursery block
