Unique Venues Provide Boost to Edinburgh Business Tourism

Unique Venues of Edinburgh (UVE), the venue-marketing consortium, has reported a substantial boost to event bookings in the city since its inception in 2005. The latest report shows that the unification of 22 of the capital's most unusual venues has increased business to its members by more than 10 percent, with enquiries reaching a value of more than £2.6million.

'The substantial increase in events staged at UVE venues since the consortium was formed is the absolute proof that working as a group is more effective,' says Carolyn Gemmell, Chair of Unique Venues of Edinburgh. 'Through working together rather than in competition with one another, we have increased member market share as well as ensuring Edinburgh as a whole can benefit from increased business tourism.'

UVE, which includes museums and galleries, visitor attractions, castles, stately homes and historic buildings, was launched to provide meeting and conference buyers with a comprehensive one-stop shop for events, as well as to aid individual venues to promote their product to a wider audience.
As part of UVE, members are promoted as one of a prestigious selection of venues through the website and at trade and hospitality shows that most venues would be unable to afford to attend independently. For buyers, UVE offers access to a broad range of meeting spaces, dinner and banqueting venues and various activities and outings for delegates.

NEW FACES AT GLENEAGLES

The Gleneagles Hotel has promoted Alan Gibb from Sous to Executive Chef, while Willie Jones returns to the resort as the manager for new restaurant, DESEO.

Alan Gibb first worked at Gleneagles in 1990 and moved on to develop his career outwith Scotland, including a spell at Michelin-starred establishments in France, before returning to Gleneagles toward the end of 2006 as Sous Chef.

Willie Jones will oversee the running of DESEO, the new Mediterranean deli-style restaurant which has been developed as part of the £18 million investment ahead of the Ryder Cup in 2014. Willie also makes a welcome return to Gleneagles having first worked there from 1998 to 2002. Since then he has gained managerial experience in award-winning establishments including Paul Heathcotes' The Longridge Restaurant.

New to the Gleneagles team is John Cole, as Front of House Manager, joining the team from The Grove in Hertfordshire. John won the Olive Barnett Award in 2004, the most prestigious award for Front of House employees under the age of 30 in the UK hospitality industry.
